In Cerca di Una Nuova Vita

Originally exhibited at the Museo in 2009 and at Arte Italia in Reno, Nevada in 2010, this show documents the experience of California’s Italian immigrants who left their country for the promise of a better life, while highlighting their struggle, determination, creativity, and ultimately, the cultural and economic contributions they have made to the development of the Golden State.

This show is a reprise of an original exhibit created by the Museo Italo Americano and sponsored by the E.L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nevada.

Title wall with a panel divided in two: on the left side, an image of a family of three immigrants descending from a ship; on the right side, a black and white image of Beniamino Bufano working on the cat sculpture. Adjacent to the title wall, in the column, there is a panel about the capital Capital campaign of the Museo with an image of A.P. Giannini.
On the wall, there is a red vertical panel on the left side featuring a map of Italy with accompanying text. Beside this vertical panel, there is a horizontal panel with images and texts displaying the timeline of immigration from Italy.
On this wall, there is the title "First Wave: City Life." Below the title, there are two panels: one green panel dedicated to North Beach and another brown panel dedicated to the Opera. Between these two panels, there are three black and white images from the early 1900s.
This wall features a green panel dedicated to the earthquakes on the left side, followed by a sequence of multiple black and white images. Adjacent to these images, there is also a red panel dedicated to the community.
This wall is divided into three panels. The first panel from the left is red and covers the Italian press. The second panel, in yellow, covers scavenging. The third panel on the right is dark brown and covers the topics of business and banking.
This wall is divided into four panels. The first panel on the far left, in green, has a title that is not readable. The second panel, in yellow, discusses traveling via sea. The last two panels, stacked one on top of the other, cover immigration laws and displaced people.
This wall has five panels. The panel on the far left has text that is not readable. The third panel features a sewing machine below it. The remaining two panels are as follows: one in brown covering the topic of mines, and the other covering boarding houses.
Starting from the left, there are three black and white pictures stacked vertically. In the middle, there is a panel about sailors, and next to that, a nice image of two children at the pier. On the floor, there are several objects: a wheel, a type of water or wine container, and a pillar.
Below a mix of black and white images related to schools, there are a couple of school desks placed as objects.
