b. 1938 Newark, New Jersey Marietta Patricia Leis received her MFA in studio art from the University of New Mexico and currently lives and works in Albuquerque. As a multimedia artist her work extends to paintings, drawings, prints sculptures and photos. Because of her Italian heritage, and the common name that they shared, Leis felt compelled to tell the story of Marietta Robusti Tintoretto. Leis wanted to bring this artist to the forefront again, as Robusti Tintoretto’s art had been subsumed into her father’s oeuvre and forgotten. The Tintoretto series was funded for three years (1983-1986) and toured the U.S. for four years. Although her later art is minimalistic, the art Leis created for the Tintoretto series in in the context and style of the 16th century. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally and she has an extensive resume of grants and honors.
