A strong advocate of Renaissance painting techniques, he co-founded the Modern Realist Painters in 1947, a group that rejected the doctrines of Abstraction, which was gaining popularity at that time. Annigoni received significant worldwide attention for his portraits of the powerful and famous, including Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, and President John F. Kennedy.
