d. 2007 Lancaster, CaliforniaOronzo Abbatecola (Italian, American; 1912-2007) was born in Ceglie, Puglia, near Bari. He became proficient as a stage designer and painter at an early age. He gravitated towards and was taken “under the wing” of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, founder of the Italian Futurism movement. As a Futurist artist, Abbatecola won many awards, including a scholarship, which brought him to America. He designed original sets for some of the world’s greatest operas, including Tosca, Parsifal, Romeo and Juliet. He also did stage design work for many operas at the War Memorial Opera house in San Francisco.
