About the Artist

Sassone, Marco

Italian
b. 1942 Campi Bisenzio (FI), ItalyMarco Sassone was born in the small Tuscan village of Campi Bisenzio. In his youth, Sassone studied architectural drafting at the Istituto Galileo Galilei in Florence. During his college years, Sassone sold watercolor paintings to Florentine tourists and by his mid-twenties had his first solo exhibition. In 1967, Sassone moved to California and participated in a variety of exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. In 1982 he was knighted by Italian president of Italy, Sandro Pertini, into the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He was also awarded a gold medal award from the Italian Academy of Arts, Literature and Science. By the 1980s, Sassone became increasingly interested in social themes such as urban street life, and paintings on that theme were on display at the Museo Italo Americano in 1994. That same year, San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan declared March 30th
Marco Sassone Day.
