Italian
b. 1937 Reggio Emilia, ItalyVasco Ascolini began his photography career in 1965. He is best known for his black and white images of the theater as well as of architecture and cultural heritage. From 1973 to 1990 he was the official photographer of the Municipal Theatre "Romolo Valli" in Reggio Emilia. In 1985 a major retrospective exhibition of his “spectacle” photographs was held at Lincoln Center in New York. Soon thereafter he turned his attention toward photographing cultural heritage sites and architecture. He continued to work primarily in black and white, as he did in theater photography. In 2000 Vasco Ascolini participated in the collective exhibition "D’Après l’antique" organized by The Louvre in Paris. The same year he was named "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters" by the Ministry of French Culture. In 2001, a thesis was devoted to his work by Daniele De Luigi, an italian critic and historian of art and photography. His images of the theater can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, MOMA, New York (section Performing Arts), the Guggenheim Museum in New York and in several other major collections throughout the USA and Europe.
