Unfolding Female

September 11, 2025 - September 14, 2025

Two images are split diagonally in the center by a wide grey line. To the left of the line is a stone figure in the vague shape of a person mounted on a rock of the same color. The head, shoulder, hips, and legs are a pale pink and grey color, and some darker grey and brown pebbles seem to fall down the figure into the small hollow of the rock the figure stands on. The statue sits on a natural wooden table, and the figure contrasts with the dark navy blue wall in the background. To the right of the grey line is a pregnant women in a plain yellow dress sitting and holding her belly in both hands. She wears a red coat with gold brocade on her shoulders, a translucent veil on top of her golden hair, and the chair below her is covered in a plain brown fabric. Her bare feet rest on the extra fabric. She has a relaxed but slightly unhappy expression as she looks somewhere to the lower right of the painting. Light comes in from a stone window to her right, lighting up the bare wood walls and stone of the room. A door stands open behind her, leading into a plain grey hallway.

Come see our next exhibition, Unfolding Female, at the future home of the Museo Italo Americano — 940 Battery Street, San Francisco.

This powerful exhibition by Lorenzo Brucia and Tricia Grame explores the symbolic connection between the Virgin Mary and ancient fertility goddesses, celebrating the enduring strength, compassion, and spiritual power of the feminine.

The Virgin Mary, venerated as the “Queen of Heaven,” shares deep cultural and spiritual ties with pre-Christian goddesses dating back to 25,000 BC. These ancient fertility figures, often carved from stone, represent the life-giving force, wisdom, and sacred role of women across millennia.
Lorenzo’s evocative photographs place Mary in wild, elemental landscapes, portraying her as a universal symbol of strength and unconditional love. Tricia’s primal stone sculptures appear unearthed from the earth itself — raw, organic forms honoring the maternal and the eternal feminine.

Together, their works offer a rich, emotional journey into the archetypal female — a story of compassion, equality, forgiveness, and peace.

“All Neolithic Goddess Symbols Lead to Mary.”

On view during the exhibition will also be Bufano’s Crucifix, one of the Museo’s most recent donations. This spiritual sculpture is a powerful symbol of Christ on the cross, stylized and abstract, yet deeply expressive of peace, unity, and love. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to see Lorenzo Brucia’s other exhibition, Saint Francis of Assisi – Emotions of the Man.
